An Introduction to Boilers
Warm is good - cold is not. Which is the best of reasons for having the correct boiler fitted to your heating system.
This website aims to help you choose the boiler suited to your home and needs.
Your best tip is talk to an expert when choosing a boiler or heating system - but it does help to have some basic knowledge so that you know the kind of questions to ask before making a judgement.
Also bear in mind that since 2005 (gas) and 2007 (oil) the majority of central heating boilers installed as replacements or into new dwellings, should conform to legislation to ensure energy efficiency. Old boilers can lose up to 40 per cent of the heat they produce - what a waste!
Why are you Changing your Boiler?
The most usual reason is that the boiler has become inefficient, or worse still given up completely. Even if the house doesn’t have any heating it is well worth doing a little research before you replace the boiler. It can be a substantial layout that you don’t want to make too often, so you want to get it right.
Another reason is that you are planning an extension to your home. In that case running one more radiator off the system in something like a conservatory might be ok. But it is always worth asking for expert advice, before you make any decision.
Where do I Start?
Search the internet to get an idea of the types of boilers available and the cost.
Then look for a qualified installer. In the case of gas, this must be a company with a CORGI accreditation.
Ask for a heat survey of your home. It should cover the amount of heat your home needs, plus pin pointing areas of heat loss - which you could help to prevent with better insulation.
Based on these calculations your installer will be able to provide you with advice on the size and type of heater you need.
If your boiler is more than five years old, a replacement could save as much as a third on your heating bill - while reducing your home’s Co2 emissions.
Types of Boiler
These come in several forms - combi, regular or system being the most usual. The size of the building, the demand for hot water and space available will govern what you chose.
To conform to legislation you need a condensing boiler, as these are most energy efficient. It should be marked A or B to signify its energy efficiency.
An A boiler should indicate a minimum energy efficiency rating of 90%, while a B is rated between 86 and 90%.
Where can the Boiler be Sited?
The answer to that question, on the whole is, wherever is most convenient. To meet building regulations all it requires is a flue to the outside of the building.
Get it Right
Installing a new boiler is not a cheap exercise, you need to get it right first time - so again we say go and ask the experts and also ensure you get a good guarantee with the work and the boiler.
